On July 1, the plastic bag ban arrived in LA’s small stores and markets. And we’d like to hear you cheer! Show some spirit by telling us why you love your reusable bag. Write a poem, compose a jingle, create a battle cry or just jot down a few words on why reusable bags make LA a better place.
There are three ways to enter:
- Log on to Facebook and enter our snazzy online contest.
- Send an email to [email protected]
- Post a comment below.
Everyone who enters will get their very own LA Stormwater organic cotton tote, which makes for stylish shopping at large grocery stores and bodegas alike. You’ll also be entered to win two tickets for the guided LA River Kayak Safari on August 7, 2014. We’ve got two pairs of tickets to give away!
The LA River Kayak Safari is a 2.5-mile journey downstream in the Elysian Valley. You’ll kayak through ponds, small rapids (yes, rapids!), and gentle river stretches. Bring your waterproof camera, because you’ll want to show your friends all of the cormorants, egrets, heron and black neck stilts you saw on your trip.
The kayak tour begins at 3:45 pm and takes roughly 4 hours from start to finish. It’s an amazing adventure. Check out all the details of our recent sunset tour here. Keep in mind that there are a few requirements to participate.
Contest ends at midnight on July 24, 2014.

The ban on plastic bags will also reduce the pollution caused by plastic pellets that are used to make the bags.
July 10th, 2014 at 2:09 pm
As a wastewater employee, I’ve seen the damage that plastic bags do to our sewer system, not to mention the Ocean. Glad to be doing my part to reduce our plastic!
July 10th, 2014 at 2:10 pm
I love reusable bags because they help the environment and they are much sturdier for carrying groceries. I hope to see fewer and fewer plastic bags blowing around the streets of LA.
July 10th, 2014 at 2:12 pm
They’re sturdy and reusable-and help our environment!
July 10th, 2014 at 2:16 pm
Changes is difficult for us, but to help save and protect our planet is worth the effort….lets all work together and let go of those plastic bags and enjoy the new reusable bags. I mean we can all agree they’re prettier
July 10th, 2014 at 2:17 pm
Reusable bags were long due when 3rd world countries have been using them for decades. They should forever ban ALL kinds of plastic/paper bags and avoid buying them even if they’re 5 cents because it’s an oxymoron and defeats the purpose. We should make bags out of recycled materials like tires, candy wrappers, etc…
July 10th, 2014 at 2:21 pm
each bag holds more. less trips from the car to the house
July 10th, 2014 at 2:45 pm
Hi I love reusable bags
July 10th, 2014 at 2:47 pm
I love re-usable bags. Aside from the sustainability factor, they remind me a little of my grandmother in Mexico. She’s been using large re-usable bags to carry produce from the mercado in her pueblo long before the sustainability craze.
July 10th, 2014 at 2:53 pm
reusable bags hold
plastic bags tear our environment
sustainability for all
July 10th, 2014 at 2:54 pm
I love reusable bags, the more the merrier. I love all of the different colors & varieties. I work in Santa Monica & they have had the ban on plastic bags longer than Los Angeles. Us Angelenos have to jump on board & save the environment. Reuse a bag, ride a bike, take a walk or leave your car home & ride the bus to work. If we all put our minds to it, we can leave this planet to our children & grandchildren.
July 10th, 2014 at 3:09 pm
This reusable bag is a nice way to show proudly while shopping at any market and tell the whole world
We are helping save the rainstorms from polluting. Yyeeyy
July 10th, 2014 at 3:19 pm

July 10th, 2014 at 3:21 pm

I LOVE my reusable bags. They have infinite uses and they do not tear with the load of contents.
Some are actually attractive and eye-catching, and the assorted sizes are convenient for every shopping need, and I just like bags.

The reusable bags are great..Not only are we saving the environment by not having or limiting the bags float around and some of them making it to the ocean, but the carbon effect it leaves behind when manufacturing the bags
July 10th, 2014 at 5:18 pm
Using reusable bag means I’ll regain more of my kitchen cabinets that has been used to store all those plastic bags.
July 10th, 2014 at 5:39 pm
Convenient, handy and good for Mother Earth. There is NO Planet B!
July 10th, 2014 at 5:40 pm
I have been using my own bags for years, long before the idea became popular. In the day when cashiers resented it when you handed them your own bag. “what am I supposed to do with this?” was the usual reaction! Now they say “thank you” what a nice change.
July 10th, 2014 at 6:52 pm
Reusable bags are good for our earth to be clean from smoke that cause pollution so everyone do there part and use reusable bags..
July 10th, 2014 at 6:53 pm
I WOLD LOVE A BAG SPECIALLY TO SAVE THE EARTH..
July 10th, 2014 at 9:41 pm
Why did it take so long to come up with this idea? I’m not mad, i’m glad to use reusable bags. Thank you!
July 10th, 2014 at 10:10 pm
Reusable bag, how do I love thee, let me count the ways. One, I love that I get 5 cents off of my purchases at many markets. Two, I love the je ne sais crois of sporting you as one of my fashion statements. Three, you are durable and washable, and with each washing you age with grace and dignity. Four, you make me feel like I’m making a difference for our city, river, and ocean. Oh how I love thee, my reusable bag.
July 10th, 2014 at 10:44 pm
I am finally remembering to take my bags out of the car when I shop! Yay!
July 10th, 2014 at 11:14 pm
No matter where you shop,
Big box, supermarket or small grocery,
You will not want to stop,
Without a tote from LA’s own baggery.
It’s the sensible way to carry your pleasures,
Now that plastic’s not what we treasure.
Already have an LA tote, and its ample size makes it great for keeping my collection of reusable bags organized. Will share the bag if you send another, but I would love to put a paddle into our river myself. — a Re-bag Lady since 1990
July 10th, 2014 at 11:50 pm
I have a collection of reusable bags, most of them riding along with me on the floor of my (hybrid) car. When they all have holes in the bottom, I will stitch them together to make a lovely afghan. Yours will be in the very center. Or, I can just use it at the grocery store, as nature intended.
July 11th, 2014 at 7:20 am
We can shop in style AND take advantage of delivering/advertising earth friendly messages on our totes!
July 11th, 2014 at 8:09 am
I collect fun reusable bags. It brings out the inner hipster in me and gives me another avenue to decorate my life.

We took on the cigarette makers on behalf of all the cancer patients and made them pay for the damage they caused….
Can we take on the plastic bag makers on behalf of the marine life and the damage they caused ? ?
July 11th, 2014 at 5:22 pm
I couldn’t carry my food or other items I bought without a reusable bag. It is also a way to cut down on plastic bags in our waterways, forest, parks, everywhere. Long live reusable bags.
July 11th, 2014 at 7:36 pm
i use tote bags every day.
July 11th, 2014 at 11:14 pm
Reusable bags are awesome. I use them for everything! I am glad to have a bag ban, I am tired of seeing plastic bags just thrown everywhere littering the streets or worse.
July 12th, 2014 at 5:58 am
I admit that it was tough remembering to take along my reusable bag when shopping, but those bags are way better than plastic. No tears, attractive designs and they can be used for many things.
July 12th, 2014 at 8:31 pm
YA gotta do it !!
July 13th, 2014 at 11:03 pm
Reusable bags-How do I love thee, let me count the ways:
The way you carry my groceries out of the store
The way you lie flat in my car in that organized place
The way you help me carry things to and from my classroom
The way you help me help our environment.
That’s how I love thee.

Would love to recieve one of your wonderful reusable bags. Tough to add anything new to the great things said above but I’ll try: The canvas bag is washable, therefore, no more concerns that bacteria will proliferate… (An arguement used by the plastic bag industry in fighting the plastic bag ban).
July 14th, 2014 at 4:01 pm
i love that bag ever so cute also happy the bag is washable always in favor of keeping L A clean
July 15th, 2014 at 9:05 am
It avoids the hassle of storing bags under the sink. It paves the road, of a new vision for most, to appreciate our space. It teaches our children that it’s okay to reuse. It makes a tiny change a person at a time.
July 15th, 2014 at 2:13 pm
The reusable bags are long overdue & now, there will be less trash in the dumps, the oceans, etc
July 15th, 2014 at 2:15 pm

July 17th, 2014 at 11:44 am
The design on the bag is beautiful. I love that we start using the reusable bag because it cut down on the use of plastic bags which are just thrown as garbage in our beach, parks, streets, waterways and all over the City.
The reusable bag will protect the environment for the next generations. The next generations deserve to enjoy the environment – like us. We should save the world for them.
July 17th, 2014 at 2:21 pm
I love reusable bags because they are spacious, easy to carry, help keep the environment clean, save natural resources, and because different designs make them cool to show of. I am glad L.A. city has done something and set the precedent for other cities to keep the environment clean.
July 17th, 2014 at 2:38 pm

Reusable bags are cool, great for the environment and help create less waste. woo woo!
July 18th, 2014 at 8:03 pm
Love reusable bags. Everyone who is not using them should be ashamed. It doesn’t take a lot of effort to put a few in your trunk and walk back out to the car when you forget to take them in with you. Together we can put a end to this invention that should have never been invented.
July 21st, 2014 at 9:18 pm
It’s really great not being able to use plastic bags. Now I don’t buy as much, saves a lot of money. Of course I have no plastic bags to put my dirty trash so I guess it will just cause more health problems by being open in the trash bin that gets picked up by the city. So, yeah, no plastic it great, Love saving money and eating less junk food.
July 21st, 2014 at 10:27 pm
One other thing, What ever happened to the bio degradable plastic bags? Why can’t we have something like that so they will ‘melt’ into the ground. Plastic is not so bad, there are many things that they can be recycled into. The ban is short sighted.

My life revolves around Reduce and Reuse!
Reduce, recycle and reuse,
Be careful with the things you choose.
Don’t leave lights and water on,
Pick up litter when you’re done.
Keep the air and water clean,
Help our earth stay strong and green!
