August Events Keep You Cool

No doubt about it, August is a hot month! This time of year, we are all – even the seagulls – looking for ways to chill out when the temps rise here in Los Angeles. Why not cool down along Southern California’s coast by getting involved in a beach clean-up or visiting one of our natural coastal locales? August provides some great opportunities for learning more about our beautiful coastline, all while beating the summer heat!

> Cabrillo Marine Aquarium kicks off August with their native garden and beach clean-up on August 3. Join aquarium educators and volunteers in helping maintain the aquarium’s native garden and learn more about its plant and animal inhabitants. Also join other volunteers in a beach cleanup clearing the shore of marine debris. The event begins at 8 a.m. Call (310) 548-7562 for more information or to make reservations.

> The Huntington Beach / Seal Beach Chapter of Surfrider is sponsoring two beach clean-ups in August – on August 10 at the Santa Ana River Jetties – Huntington State Beach and on August 24 on 17^th Street – Huntington City Beach. Visit Surfrider to learn more about how you help out Surf City, USA!

> While you’re down in Orange County, why not visit Bolsa Chica wetlands, one of the last standing wetlands ecosystems in Southern California. Comprised of 1,700 acres of mesa, lowlands and wetlands, Bolsa Chica is home to native plants and a host of wildlife who call this natural treasure their home.  

> Tickle those toes in the sand! Heal the Bay’s monthly Nothin’ But Sand beach clean-up is on August 17 at Playa del Rey’s Toes Beach. The clean-up begins at 10 a.m. and it’s a great way to get family and friends involved! Make it a day and plan to have lunch afterwards along the coast!

> Another opportunity to visit Southern California’s cool coast is offered by Friends of Ballona Wetlands. The wetlands are open for tours all throughout the month of August. Check their calendar for exact dates of both the salt and freshwater marshes. Blue Herons and Snow Egrets await your visit!
