Love Is In February’s Events

As we’re all aware, the old adage goes, “Love is in the air!” And, while it’s true that there is quite a bit of amore swirling around as we prepare for Valentine’s Day, there’s just as much love in February’s stormwater-friendly events. Love the environment? Then have we got the events for you!

Love Marine Life? 

On February 13, Friends of Cabrillo Marine Aquarium presents Birds and Bees Under the Seas, a family-friendly evening program that includes age-appropriate stories about how specific creatures find mates, reproduce and ensure the survival of their young.

Heal the Bay’s Santa Monica Pier Aquarium celebrates a Whale of A Weekend on February 15 – 16. Highlighting the annual migration of the Pacific gray whale, this two-day event will provide visitors with the opportunity to spot migrating whales at a wildlife observation station at the west end of the Santa Monica Pier and learn more about these magnificent creatures through story time, film screenings and whale-related arts and crafts at the aquarium.

Don’t forget that February is prime whale watching season! Excursions are happening daily from ports of call all over Southern California.

Love Clean Water and Clean Beaches?

Heal the Bay hosts their monthly Nothin’ but Sand beach clean-up on February 16 at Will Rogers State Beach. Bring your own reusable gloves and bucket or canvas bag and be prepared to show the beach a little love by cleaning it up!

Not much time this month but you want to help out? No problem. We’ve got a solution! On Saturday, February 16, Justin Rudd’s 30-minute beach clean-up takes place at Belmont Shore. For 13 years, Justin’s been coordinating this monthly beach clean-up. Come on out and show him how much you appreciate his efforts to keep our Pacific Ocean clean!

Why not take a moment to learn more about the County of Los Angeles Flood Control District’s proposed Clean Water Clean Beaches Measure this month? It’s important to know the facts about how the funds from this proposed fee would work to clean up LA’s rivers, creeks, lakes and beaches.

Love Trees?

TreePeople has events throughout the month of February – ranging from Park Work Days to Street – Residential Combo Tree Care and Planting workshops. This month’s calendar is simply filled with events that are sure to keep your inner tree-hugger happy.

Love Gardening?

From native gardening design classes to volunteer days to new classes featuring the importance of pollinators and creating smaller, cozy native gardens, the Theodore Payne Foundation offers a full slate of gardening-related events in February – just in time for spring, which is just around the corner!

Love Pets?

Southern California’s Pet Expo kicks off the month on Saturday, February 2 at the Long Beach Arena. Myriad exhibitors and a dog costume contest are just a few of the activities happening at this fun, family-friendly event.

Love to Do-It-Yourself?

Calling all home and automotive do-it-yourselfers! Do you have information on how to properly dispose of those automotive fluids or paint once you’re finished changing your car’s oil or painting the kitchen? Be sure and keep information on LA Sanitation’s seven SAFE Centers close by.

Love LA’s wildlife? 

The Great Backyard Bird Count takes place on February 15-18 this year. It’s an annual 4-day event that engages bird watchers of all ages in counting birds to create a real-time snapshot of where the birds are all over North America. It’s easy to do and a great way to get children engaged to learn more about the wildlife living right in their own backyard!
