May is National Bike Month and May 18th is National Bike to Work Day! We hope you’ll participate (if you don’t already)! And if you don’t usually bike to work but decide that come May, you’re going to give it a try, we want to make sure you’re as prepared as possible. That might mean carving out a new route to work, planning extra time in your day to commute, borrowing a friend’s bike, investing in a bike helmet, or budgeting differently for the month so that you can use a bike-share program. We want to help you out as much as we can, so here’s a list of some of the best bike trails/routes throughout LA.

Commuter routes

• Bicycle Friendly Business District in Northeast LA – Colorado Boulevard, York Boulevard, Eagle Rock Boulevard, and N. Figueroa Street
• Dedicated bike lane that follows the Expo Line from Culver City to Santa Monica
• Figueroa Street – a relatively seamless bike path from Downtown LA to South Los Angeles
• Venice Boulevard in Mar Vista towards Venice Beach where there are protected bike lanes

Recreational trails

• Ballona Creek Bike Path offers a lovely ride to the ocean at Playa del Rey, running past various side parks and parklets
• Griffith Park Bike Loop gives a great tour of the park as well as numerous hills to get your legs working
• Los Angeles River: Glendale Narrows/Elysian Valley – a scenic path where you will find lots of outdoor recreation including bird watching, fishing, horseback riding and more
• Marvin Braude/Pacific Coast Bike Path – 22 sparkling miles of coastal biking  

If you don’t have your own bike, you can still enjoy these bike routes by taking advantage of the cities many bike-share programs including Metro Bike Share, Breeze Bike Share, LimeBike and more! These programs are worthwhile because they’re easy to use, you only pay when you bike, and there are many pick up and drop off locations throughout Los Angeles.

So, get out there Angelenos! Feel the fresh air, get some exercise and be safe! And remember, the more you bike, the less you drive and that means fewer car-related pollutants entering our waterways!
